The electrons have to make a complete circuit through this cathode, the seawater and back to an anode near the beach. The cathode accumulates white deposits (probably calcium sulphate precipitated from seawater) that we clean off regularly. Notice the tiny red spots on the deposit - they are newly settled juveniles of squat lobsters.
