Hydrothermal vents, which are found along mid-ocean ridges are like oases of the sea because they are hotspots for biodiversity in the deep ocean. Here you find super-heated fluids flowing from chimneys creating clouds of underwater "smoke". The effluent from these vents can be extremely toxic to humans, but supports a profusion of life that is specially adapted to this harsh environment.
