A block of wood, affixed to a deployment platform, is lowered into position beneath the pod 3 camera system on Barkley Canyon, 12 May 2014. Scientists will study colonization and decomposition of the wood, as organisms such as wood-boring bivalves burrow into it. The wood block is deployed along with a chunk of carbonate rock and three sections of humpback whale ribs.
